Update for Applicants (5/10/2015)

Echoes to the applicants have been sent out! Four applicants have been invited to move to the extended applications.

Update for Applicants (5/7/2015)

Staff will finish up giving input and voting on Round 2 applicants by Friday evening.  We plan on sending all applicants a message regarding their status this weekend!  Hopefully on Saturday, but possibly on Sunday.

Thanks for being patient! :)

Artist Application Information

Important Dates for the Initial Application

Start Date: April 13th, 2015
End Date: May 4th 23:59 ST (Server Time), 2015

Mycena Cave’s Goal

Mycena Cave is looking for one or more Customs and/or Breedings Specialists.  The new artist(s) will be assigned to either customs or breedings, with the potential for their assignment to be switched from one to the other as necessary.  We are looking for artists with a very specific set of qualifications.  Some of these qualifications will be evaluated during the application process, and some of these qualifications will be evaluated during a trial period.  Listed below are our expectations for a Mycena Cave artist:

  • Artist behaves in a professional manner
  • Artist exhibits confidence with their artistic ability
  • Artist responds to and incorporates critique into their work
  • Artist has the time and the motivation to work on Mycena Cave regularly
  • Artist meets deadlines and follows instructions
  • Artist communicates effectively with Mycena Cave members and staff
  • Artist is friendly and gets along with Mycena Cave members and all staff members
  • Artist keeps staff-only information in confidence
  • Artist is willing to work exclusively on customs or exclusively on breedings, or switch between the two if necessary
  • Artist mimics the Mycena Cave style willingly and effectively
  • Artist uses SAI* or Photoshop Creative Suite**

(*For anyone interested in downloading SAI or trying the free trial period of 30 days, you can find the download on this page.  It’s a lot more affordable than new versions of Photoshop and it’s awesomeee)
(**You can get an official Adobe CS2 download if you register an Adobe account and get it here:  It’s old but I’ve never had compatibility issues, and it’s still a great program)

Incentives

Before you apply, you should ask yourself why you want to be a part of the Mycena Cave team!  As an artist on Mycena Cave, you will:

  • Help glitch and Myla make informed decisions about site policies and site directions
  • Become part of a close-knit staff team
  • Be matched with a staff artist mentor to help guide you and integrate you into the team
  • Receive compensation in the form of gems, custom credit, or USD
  • Interact with a variety of different members, helping bring their dream customs and babies to life
Potential Drawbacks

Not all is fun and games, unfortunately, and staff members may feel the effects of negative social consequences such as:

  • Increased strain in relationships between you and non-staff friends because you must keep all staff information in confidence
  • Stress because you may have Mycena Cave art deadlines on top of a busy schedule
  • Being held to a higher standard of behavior on forums, chats, and echoes because you are representing Mycena Cave
  • Increased likelihood of being a target of harsh off-site critique by anonymous members since you are more visible

Application & Trial Period: Overview

Anyone can fill out the Initial Application.  The application consists of three parts:

  1. Art Examples - Examples of previous work
  2. Mycena Cave Style Request - Specific medium-complexity item drawn in the Mycena Cave style
  3. Application Questions - Set of questions to which applicants must submit answers

Up to four artists will be picked out of the Initial Application entries and will be asked to do the Extended Application which consists of two parts:

  1. Fulfill a mock-order:  You will act as a Mycena Cave artist and a staff artist will act as a user as you make a mock-custom (custom will have a minimum of a patterned coat, hair edit, and item edit)
  2. Live extensive interview with glitch and Myla in a private Mycena Cave chatroom

One or more artists will be selected for a three-month trial period. Trial artists will:

  1. Start receiving compensation for their work
  2. Be slowly introduced to staff information with the assistance of their mentor
  3. Start taking custom orders with their mentor added to all custom order echoes
  4. Receive regular art style critique from two artist staff members
  5. Receive monthly feedback from Myla

After three months, Myla and glitch will give the artist(s) a final evaluation.  If they meet all qualifications, then the artist(s) will join the team full-time.

Initial Application

Echo application to Mycenangelo when you’re finished!

Art Examples
Please show between 3 - 5 pieces of recent (within the last year) work.

Mycena Cave Style Request
Please draw a vase with three flowers and submit the .psd (e-mail it to myla@mycenacave.com or just provide a dropbox link to it in your echo to Mycenangelo).  The vase should have at least one curve, and have a pattern on it.  The vase can be transparent or opaque.  One flower should be a type that is actinomorphic (radially symmetric), but the other two should have a more interesting/complex shape (Examples of complex flower shapes, minus the first example). Leaves and filler greenery are optional.  Canvas size should be somewhere around 300 x 300 (taller is fine — I mainly don’t want something super tiny! :D)

We will be looking at how closely you can mimic the Mycena Cave style.  Here are some specific aspects about your art we will be looking at:

  • Lineart width
  • Lineart color
  • Contouring of pattern
  • Shading style
  • Shading color/intensity
  • Highlight style
  • Highlight style/intensity
  • Perspective of the flowers
  • Style of the flowers
  • How well all the colors/shapes work together
  • Ability to follow request directions
  • Neatness of your .psd (organized groups, clipping layers, etc.)

Application Questions

  1. Why are you interested in becoming an artist for MC?
  2. What art program do you use?
  3. Do you have other on-going art commitments (e.g. working for another site, freelance art commissions, etc)? If so, what are they, and how much time of your time do they take up?
  4. How much time do you think you’ll have to work on MC every week? Please give both your minimum and maximum estimates.
  5. How much time do you currently spend on MC? Please estimate by either a weekly or monthly basis.
  6. What is your age?
  7. In what country are you located?
  8. Are you currently a student?
  9. Are you willing (and able) to adjust your personal art style as necessary to match MC’s style?
  10. What is your opinion on critique, and how do you respond to it?
  11. When asked for input, are you comfortable with voicing your opinions in a constructive manner?
  12. How do you react to working under pressure?
  13. It can be hard to draw professional boundaries with friends, especially when they don’t have any ill intentions with their requests. How would you handle a situation in which your friends ask you for hints or teasers about non-public or staff-only information?
  14. You’ve just finished an art piece that you’re proud of, but when you show it to someone, they only point out things they would have done differently. How would you respond to this person?

Do you still have questions?  Feel free to ask in this thread or to echo me!

Looking forward to seeing new artists.

Posted 04/13/15
Good luck! :D
Posted 04/13/15

if I had the ability I would apply in a millisecond, working with a petsite always seemed like so much fun!!

good luck to everyone who applies, I can’t wait to see who the shiny new artists will be! (also, artists specifically for breedings?? that sounds so delicious and exciting and full of more babies in the future!)

*Attempts to stop the drooling.*
I have to try. *w*

Posted 04/13/15

you know, in all my time on petsites I’ve never seen a staff application opening with a list of pros and cons included in the description of the position. often it seems like the pros are obvious(an artist position! with potential pay! contribute to the site! so tempting), but when they’re not in front of you, the cons aren’t. they are just as important to consider. and it’s not the greatest feeling to resign from a position when you realize it really isn’t for you. knowing what to expect reduces the chance of that happening.

it’s good to be realistic and put things in perspective that way. idk just a minor detail here that I thought was cool.

gl to those who apply!

I would LOVE to apply for this… Im in an advanced placement art class and I love art and I have an auto immune disorder that prevents me from getting a job that’s taxing on my body physically. SO SAD I don’t have the art programs needed to apply for this job :‘c BUT GOOD LUCK TO OTHER APPLICANTS!!! The art style on Mycena Cave is beautiful and so fun to draw!

-places bets on Rhyme-
Was hoping you would apply.

Aw, i was gonna apply, but I switched from SAI to Clip Studio Paint D: Good luck to everyone else thoughkyrctyn

Argh, I’m sorrry~

There are a few reasons that I’m restricting the art programs to just SAI and Photoshop, but basically .psd compatibility is a pain in the boompah:

We use .psds and send them back an forth to each other—since photoshop has clipping layers/groups/etc, other art programs have to be able to handle this.  For example, you can clip and apply layer effects to a group folder in Photoshop, but I don’t know of any other art program that can handle that, even SAI.  It’s also not uncommon for artists to hand me a SAI .psd that just gets totally wonky when I open it in Photoshop — groups will disappear or get mixed around (I still haven’t figured out why that happens sometimes but I suspect it’s because SAI has a feature that Photoshop lacks with group folders).

I’ve also found that I have to merge and save my SAI artists’ stuff with SAI because Photoshop renders things like luminosity differently (it looks duller in Photoshop when a SAI .psd is merged in Photoshop… arghghghg XD).

It’s really crappy to have to put that restriction in place but I’m already having trouble dealing with compatibility with just one other program, sadly! :<

You know, I was going to vibrate.. but I think I got beaten to it. OuO
Posted 04/13/15
Hmn… I don’t suppose there’s any kind of account age restrictions, are there? I would like to do the thing, but I’ve only joined Mycena about a month or so ago, which I feel would translate to my time being spent on-site not having stablized yet. >.>;
Posted 04/13/15
Promise:  No, there isn’t an account age restriction!  Part of the reason we have the 3-month trial in place is so we have a good stretch of time to see how the new artist(s) work for a longer period of time in case we don’t know very much about them.  There are quite a few new users, so we didn’t want to have any account age restrictions. :)

I’m desperately trying to get a good program for drawing on my computer, just in general, I’ll probably miss the application window. But I’m getting mixed signals on wether or not SAI can run on a Mac. Could anybody enlighten me on wether you can or not? From what I’m seeing its a windows only thing but I could be misreading.
Posted 04/13/15

Haha, thank you, Xiao! >w<

It’s 3AM and I’m trying to draw that vase, probably not the best idea. :‘I

apiphily:

SAI is not Mac compatible.  You can get an official Adobe CS2 download for your Mac if you register an Adobe account and get it here: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html

It’s really old, but I used that up until a few months ago!  One of our artist still uses it and I’ve never had compatibility issues with their files.  Fewer bells and whistles than the new Photoshop, but it’s still a great program.

Posted 04/13/15, edited 04/13/15

D’: I used to use Photoshop but, like kyrctyn, switched over to Clip Studio last year. Does the version of Photoshop matter? I have CS2 and can’t really afford to upgrade.Whoops, already answered! SAI is cheaper but has too many weird little problems quirks, since it never gets updated.

Of course, being such an extreme forum lurker also probably doesn’t exactly help my application. Alas.

I believe that Paint Tool SAI is PC-exclusive. There are ways to convert SAI over to work for MAC but there are bugs and issues involved with that.

For anyone interested in downloading SAI or trying the free trial period, you can find the download on this page.

Download the ‘full version’ and it should automatically give you the 31 day free trial period. This is where I downloaded SAI to try and from whom I bought the full version.

Posted 04/13/15

If there enough people out there using exclusively Clip Studio, I can do some compatibility tests tomorrow and see what happens!  I think I still have my code for it somewhere.. XD if it still works.. hahaha.  I’ll keep you guys updated.

Also, extreme forum lurking does not hurt your application!  A few of our artists are forum lurkers :)
