[Once Upon A Magical Library] Event Guide and Spoilers

Hi, I had fun chronicling the last site event we had so I’m back at it again to detail out the goings on, happenings, images, descriptions, and encounters of Once Upon A Magical Library!

Town Square Page

Event Information
  • This event runs from April 30rd at 12:00 noon ST through May 14th at 12:00 noon ST.
  • This is a word-building event, similar to previous years’ spring events:
    • Every 15 minutes, players are able to collect a letter.
    • Players earn event points by using the letters they’ve collected to build words to other players.
  • There are four Genre Anthologies, which have their own special word lists:
    • The Genre Anthologies’ word-lists are a community goal, quelling the magics loose in the library.
    • Instead of sending a word to another player, players may send words from Anthologies’ word lists to the Anthologies.
  • Each Genre Anthologies will grant an extra prize when their word-list has been completed:
    • Genre Anthology prizes do not cost any event points, and can be collected once per player.
    • A player must send at least one word to a Genre Anthology to collect its prize.
    • When all four Genre Anthologies have been completed, a third event coat will be unlocked:
      • This coat will not cost any event points to collect
      • A player must send at least one word to each Genre Anthology to collect this coat.
    • Words may still be sent to the Anthologies after their word-lists have been completed
  • As in our previous events, there will be a number of Random Encounters added to the site. Some of these will be just for flavor, but there are a few which will award items.

Library Event Help Page
So… What Do I Do?

Every 15 minutes, you can gather 3 letters from the The Magical Library. Once you have enough letters to spell a word, you can either send it to a Mycenian of your choice, or, if it’s one of the specific words that will help quell the Spirit Anthology, you can send it to them instead. Points are awarded based on the value of the letters that make up your word. Each word you send and receive will reduce the remaining time before you can collect your next rune.

A few things to note:

  • to send a word to a Mycenian, its companion account must be participating in this event
  • you can have a maximum of 15 letters at a time
  • you can move your letters around by dragging them, or click them to send them to the wordsmithing bench

To discard letters, place them on your wordsmithing bench and click “Discard”: you will receive one point per discarded letter. If you receive a word that you wish to remove from view, you can do so by clicking its red “x” button in your list of received words. Doing so causes the word to vanish from your list of received words, and also from your pet’s profile.

You can send and receive words for up to 24 hours after the end of the event, after which your remaining letters turn into a single point each. The event shop will remain open one week after the end of the event.

Genre Anthologies

This event involves four Genre Anthologies which need to be quelled. To help quell a Genre Anthology, it must receive 7 of each of the words listed on its page. This is a community-goal, with words sent by all players counting towards it. Once a Genre Anthology is quelled, one copy of the Anthology’s prize is made available to players.

If all four Genre Anthologies are quelled, a special prize is also made available, and a shop will opened where players can buy more of the Anthology prizes for gems.

Important note: To be eligible to collect a Anthology’s prize, you must send it at least one word from its list. To be eligible to collect the special prize, you must send at least one word to each of the Anthologys. This doesn’t need to happen before a Anthology is quelled — you can continue to send words to them throughout the event.

Letter Trading

If you’re having trouble getting a specific vowel that you need, you can visit Professor Sprocket’s (totally legitimate) Bones Trading Post to trade him for it. There, you can exchange any two tiles that you have for a single vowel of your choice. These letters act exactly like ordinary letters, with the exception that they cannot be sent to the Genre Anthologies.

Letter trading is an experimental feature. It won’t change during this event, but may be removed, replaced, or tweaked in future instances.

Professor Sprocket’s Totally Authorized Letter Trading

Visit the Letter Trading Post

Well, howdy-do!

You spot the familiar form of Professor Sprocket waving you over. He’s standing in front of some new contraption, but before you can ask him what exactly he’s scrapped together, he’s hitting you with a sales pitch:

Couldn’t help but notice that y’seem t’be hurtin’ mighty hard for some vowels. Same story every year; too many consonants, not enough vowels. Sad, sordid tale, that. Thankfully, bein’ the enterprisin’ gentleman I am, I’ve come up with a simple solution! Trade me just two of your letters, any two at all, an’ I’ll provide you with any vowel of your choice. A hundred percent, bonafide, real vowel – or, y’know, close enough that the typical Mycenian couldn’t tell it apart from one.

He winks,

Just maybe don’t test ‘em out on any Genre Anthologies. Don’t think they’d mix well with whatever magic makes up those things.

Important: traded letters cannot be sent to the Genre Anthologies
You could select any two letters to trade them for the vowel of your choice (A, E, I, O, U)
No Refunds!

Library Gift Shop (Prize Shop)

The shop will open on May 7th, 2023.
The shop will close one week after the event (probably on May 21, 2023, maybe by 12pm Mycena ST)

Welcome!
The pink-furred Kelph is still in the library, although this time, she’s standing behind a desk with a stack of books at her elbow. A name tag around her neck reads: Paige T. She glances up from her work and beams at you, though she keeps her voice quiet when she speaks. “Hello again. Please, feel free to browse.” She puts her quill down and gestures at the cart beside her desk, which is filled with books and an assortment of scrolls. “These are some extra copies of titles we found while cleaning. You’re welcome to take some to keep as a thank you for your assistance.”

Need More Points?
You can buy points at a price of 100 points per gem here (max 30 gems).

The Library

For these library images, I downloaded it from the HTML canvas and uploaded it to imgur, so they’re not a Mycena-hosted images here. There might be a way to get the Mycena image but I couldn’t find it.

The library is suspiciously quiet… perhaps it’s best to give the letters a bit more time to come out of hiding again.

With “letters” present in the form of paper balls and planes:

Library image is not always the same pattern of paper balls and planes!

Not Spoilers After All (Unrelated)

Ended up finding some interested images and spoiler text in the source code, not sure how/if they tie into this particular event. View at your own risk of real spoilers. Also possible this is from something unrelated that I’m not familiar with. Just thought it seemed related due to theming and mention of a certain character who is in this event.

They’re not actually related to this event.

The drawer appears to be locked, needing a 5-digit code.

A couple of well-read books are stacked along the edge of his desk. Notably, a history of the Cave (written by Ambrose, no less!) and a locked tome titled “Plans, volume 2” apparently written by Sprocket himself. Suspicious, but could also just be a day planner.

Several blueprints, barely discernible due to their complexity. One appears to show some enormous machine with measurements, materials, and other unrecognizable symbols. Another shows a diagram of several caverns with machinery winding its way through many of them. Strange symbols are scrawled along the margins and within the drawings themselves. Weird, but not incriminating

Go figure a guy who calls himself “Sprocket” would keep an actual sprocket on his desk. You’re surprised it’s not a diploma both bearing his name and signed by him. What an egomaniac.

Sprocket must do a lot of writing, because he keeps a spare pen close at paw.

A quill pen tucked into a bottle of dark ink. Everyone keeps one of these on their desk. Not exactly evidence.

Encounters
Image Text Item
A piece of paper brushes up against your ankle. You reach down to fetch the page, only for it to leap onto your paw of its own accord. You startle backwards, but the page has a firm grip on you and scampers easily up your arm. It stops to rest somewhere around your elbow, and you look to see that you’ve actually picked up a bookwyrm. The little paper wyrm rustles its wings at you before climbing the rest of the way, not stopping until it’s settled comfortably on your shoulder.

Bookwyrm

You’ve just about finished clearing out a bookcase when you see a tuft of white stuck to the back of the shelf. Carefully, you wiggle it free and soon find yourself holding a feather quill. It’s in surprisingly decent condition and looks like it might still be good for writing a book or three.

Feather Quill

A faint, otherworldly golden glow lekas from between two tall bookshelves. Curious, you wnader towards it only to see a set of double doors with the light coming through the cracks. When you open them, you’re greeted with several musty coats hanging in the closet and a blast of chilly air. Beyond the coats, howeever, is a beautiful golden landscape - and a single lamp post. Not exactly what you expected, but a wondrous sight nonetheless!

Magical Lamp-post Background

You’ve been wandering around with an old, delicate book of fairy tales for a while now, trying to find its proper place. It should be a glass case due to the age of the book, but you just can’t find it. Then - aha! The glass case you were looking for is right there, in front of a … door? Odd. As soon as you finish placing the book in the case, you hear a rumbling from the door. “Little librarian, little librarian …” An ominous voice echoes through the stacks and the door rattles dangerously. As soon as you back up, a scroll falls on your head, startling you into bolting out of the shelves. At least you got something for the scare!

Scroll of Straw

The book you need to grab and shelve elsewhere is just at the end of a row of bookshelves, but it’s dark down there. An odd wooden door at the far end of the row is giving you a weird feeling, but you push through your trepidation and walk into the gloom. Just as you’re grabbing the book you need, the door rattles - slowly at first, then like someone is tugging hard at it. “Let me in, let me in …” A muffled voice comes from the other side, and you turn and hurry out of the row. As you’re catching your breath, you find a squashed scroll in the book. What a nice surprise!

Scroll of Sticks

You’ve heard some rumors of odd doors throughout the library, and this must be one of them. The door looks strudy - it looks like it’s made of stone and you aren’t sure you could even open it on your own. Suddenly, something bangs on the door from the other side and a growling voice comes through faintly: “Little librarian, let me in, let me in ... ” You take a step back, but a bookwyrm zips by and gently nudges you back a few steps. The banging continues for a moment before whoever’s on the other side gives up. The bookwyrm pats your head and hands you a scroll before nudging you away again.

Scroll of Bricks

You head towards one of the eastern halls, a stack of cookbooks in paw. As you near the doorway, you hear raised voices. You hesitate, and after a moment, you realize that what you’re listening to is a heated discussion about whether a treatise on breadmaking belongs in the history section (“It’s about the rediscovery of baking!”) or with the rest of the cookbooks (“There are recipes!”). You turn on a heel and decide your books can wait to be shelved. n/a
As you pick a book off a table to re-shelve, you catch a glimpse of an illustration on its pages. You pause to flip through the book, admiring the richly-drawn images that adorn each chapter, all wildly imaginative and vividly colored. When you reach the end, you close the book with a satisfied sigh–and suddenly realize that the room is much darker than it had been when you started. Where did the whole afternoon go? n/a
The book you need to shelve elsewhere is at the very top of the bookshelf in front of you - its colorful spine is teasing you just out of reach. The ladders and step stools are all being used right now, so - “Do you need help?” A little ineki kit loks at you shyly, oversized glasses nearly falling off her nose, then looks up. “The red one?” When you nod, she sets her book down carefully then scampers up the bookshelf in no time flat, grabbing the book and scampering back own and handing it to you. She picks up her own book again and smiles sheepishly at you. “D-don’t tell anyone I did that!” n/a
A group of Mycenians have found some armchairs and are lounging comfortably with books open in their laps. One of them looks up and says, “We’re doing research.” Then, with a wink, he returns to his reading. n/a
The shelves are quiet - almost. You hear some whispering and giggling from a hidden spot behind some tall bookcases, and when you poke your head around the corner, two young kelph freeze and stare at you. “W-we weren’t doing anything!” one says before you have a chance to ask. The other quickly gathers up some papers strewn on the ground and nudges their friend, and both bolt away, papers clutched tightly to their chests. But you swore you saw drawings of two familiar ineki … and flowers and sparkles. A lot of sparkles. n/a
You look left. You look right. No one else is here. You’re on a break. What better time to try opening Petals of Passion again? You carefully lift the cover - odd, it’s slightly warm - and … whoosh! The book flips open on its own, pages flipping quickly from a sudden sweet-smelling wind carrying red rose petals that fly around you. “Another one, huh?” An ineki sighs, rounding the corner and shoving a broom and dustpan into your arms. He doesn’t wait for you to speak, instead turning around and mumbling, “that’s the fourth one today,” before disappearing again. Better get sweeping! n/a
This section of the library is overly warm. You’re not quite sure what’s causing the temperature change, and a trio of ineki shelving books nearby have to stop every few books to wipe their brows. “Why is it so warm?!” One of them says, slumping against the shelf. “The books are all magical, right? What if we got the Prince of Ice? Do you think that would help?” The three all look at each other, considering it seriously, then sigh and continue shelving. If the Prince of Ice goes missing, you know where to look! n/a
You hear someone speaking softly nearby as you wander through the bookshelves. When you follow the sound, you see the back of a drasillis sitting in front of the Prince of Ice, gesturing animatedly. They seem to be telling the ineki on the cover a story. The Prince seems to be listening intently, and when he sees you, he gives you a nod of acknowledgement. Perhaps it’s best to leave them to it. n/a

Thanks to Hoax, Purr, Nobo, Nonnavlis, and Dracogryph for some of the encounter texts!

The Romance has quieted! The remaining Genre Anthologies rage harder…
After First Anthology, Romance, was quieted all the other genre anthologies raged harder and added 13 additional words! This effectively knocked back progress for almost-completed anthologies from about 90-something % to about 40-45%.

As the final missing word is pulled back into the tome, its color seems to return, and the tears on the faces of the two ineki upon the cover dry instantly. You gently attempt to open its pages, and are relieved to find that whatever magical force was keeping it closed has abated. The pages flutter in excitement, and the familiar scent of roses is joined by actual, physical rose petals flitting up from the text.

As the pages settle, you find yourself eager to read the stories printed upon them… but instead of the steamy romance you were expecting, the words ‘Thank You’ scrawl themselves across the open face of the book, and a little gift of gratitude swirls into existence.

Librarian’s Spectacles

The cover of this book depicts a familiar-looking detective standing in a shadowy alley, lit cigarette in paw. You’re not sure if this book is about your friend Aliza Montaigne, or if it’s perhaps what inspired her to become a detective, but you can’t wait to find out.

Unfortunately, as you open the book, a spattering of the words contained within appear to burn from the pages, wisping away into the library with only the faint scent of smoke left in their wake. The book slams shut with a crack like a gunshot, and the detective pictured upon its cover appears to be fixing you with a disappointed glower, their cigarette now snuffed beneath their footpaw.

You’ve never had the cover of a book make you feel so guilty before… Maybe if you track down those wayward words, that detective will forgive you for setting them free in the first place.

Quieted Anthology

Mystery was the last anthology we quieted, on May 12th, around 6 PM Mycena ST!
The Mystery has quieted!

The final word disappears into the book with a curl of acrid smoke, making you cough and wave to clear the air. Beneath your hand, the cover of the book glows with the soft, yellow light of a gas street lamp and you think you just catch the detective nodding approval at you. Then she stills, focus returned to her unresolved mystery, and you crack open the anthology to see if you can’t help her with that, too.

Instead, you find that the letters from the words you’ve gathered have reassembled into a patchwork line: CASE CLOSED. Then the pages hollow out, and an object falls into your hand… a gift, or another lead? Definitely just a gift. You’ve probably spent too much time thinking about mystery novels.

This book feels unusually cold, as though it pulls the warmth from your very fingers. The profile of a lonely kelph overlooking a small system of distant planets adorns the cover, much of their features obscured by their space helmet. As you glide your hand over the embossing and towards the edge, their haunting blue gaze follows your motion – even as you open to the first page, until the angle of the cover no longer allows for that uncomfortable contact.

It starts as a vague tugging upon your fingers, slowly but surely growing in intensity. You’re only a handful of lines into the foreword when the text begins to warp. It twists and spirals and the pull upon your hand becomes strong enough that you struggle to pull back. One by one, the words disappear into tiny black holes, snuffed out of existence like so many distant stars.

Finally, the gravitational force is enough to pull the book closed. The kelph meets your eyes for a moment, before slowly turning their gaze back to the cold vacuum of space. One by one, the stars in the distance disappear.

You’d best replace those words quickly.

Quieted Anthology

The Speculative has quieted! The remaining Genre Anthologies rage harder…
The Speculative was the 3rd genre quieted, around 1 AM Mycena ST on May 10th.

The final missing word is pulled gently from your hands. It seems to orbit around the book a couple of times before finally settling itself upon the page, and with its re-addition, the rest of the text glows brightly. The pages flutter as if some unseen force is flipping through them–front to back, back to front–and finally, the book pulls itself closed.

The astronaut kelph on the cover gives you a smile, and though their paws are not visible in the artwork, you’re certain they’d be giving you a thumbs up if they could. Just as you return their smile with one of your own, a high-pitched whistling pierces the air. Something strikes the book with a thud, and as the dust thrown up by its approach clears, you notice a small gift resting atop the book.

The Fantasy has quieted! The remaining Genre Anthologies rage harder…

An ineki clad in armor stands proudly atop a rocky ledge, sword lodged in the earth at his side. He peers out from the cover, his gaze distant, as though he’s replaying the latest in a long procession of victories behind his eyes. A distant roar echoes in your imagination, and the vague scent of ash tickles your nose as you flip open the tome.

Inside, the words quickly suck you in–a harrowing tale of gallantry and honor plays out before you, and your vision clouds as your imagination takes over. Or–wait, no. Is your vision actually clouding? Are your lungs sort of beginning to burn–?

The words inked across the page suddenly burst into flame as a handful of pages tear free and fold themselves into the biggest bookwyrm you’ve ever seen. It lets out a thunderous roar, spreads its wings, and alights away into the library, leaving the book unfinished and the noble Prince’s deeds undone.

After a long struggle, you’ve finally wrested the final missing word from the big bookwyrm’s hoard. The creature hisses at you and arches its back like an angry cat before slowly unfolding, each torn page slipping gently back into its proper place within the book.

As the book closes with one final, fading roar, the knight upon the cover gives you a slight nod of recognition. As if summoned by his approval, a shimmer appears and coalesces into the shape of a small gift.

The Collected Anthologies

Now that the wayward words have finally been restored to their tomes, you breathe a sigh of relief.

The library is still chaotic and messy, but at least you’ve managed to quell some of the marauding magic.

One by one, you gather up the books into your arms. It takes you a few minutes, but you manage to find where each of them belongs–four perfectly sized slots in a bookcase set apart from the rest, adorned with a simple placard that reads Sorceress’ Favorites. There are lots of other books lining the shelves, the spines of which look lovingly creased from repeated readings, but everything here is covered in a thick layer of dust, as though they haven’t been perused in a very long time.

After gently returning the final book to its spot, you give the long-languished shelves a few good puffs of breath, clearing away at least some of the accumulated dust. And as you do so, the entire bookcase begins to glow.

You step back, wondering if you’ve set off some sort of trap–maybe the Sorceress likes her books dusty? But instead of whatever sort of trap you’d envisioned being hidden in a library, an elegant shape steps forward from the glow. A graceful hooved kelph, adorned in beautiful finery.

A final gift, perhaps, for returning the Sorceress’ favorite reads to their proper home.

(Those who contributed to quieting the anthologies could now collect an Active Fairytale kelph.

These are really cool finds, Umbra!

The images you put in a spoiler tag are from a previous event some time ago — I’ve looked around though and I’m endlessly curious where you stumbled across these image links still lurking around :D

glitch Makes sense! They seemed a bit out of place but kinda cool. They were in the compiled javascript (included at the bottom of the site layout) along with somne other bits. But the compiled javascript includes a lot of things for various games and things so it was hard for me to be sure what it was for, haha. Thanks for confirming it’s not relevant.

It was compiled down to this:

Sorry, I caught this screenshot before I realized you were documenting the event. If I come across another undocumented one, I’ll copy paste the text!

glitch Haha, yeah. I was looking for images/ in the javascript code and came across them. I was actually mainly trying to see if there was any image URL available for the canvas image that shows the library on the collect letters page.
I did not manage to find it but thought the other images and text was kinda a neat find. I guess being a canvas that uses encoded image data, the library image it doesn’t really need a URL somewhere, but I was just being hopeful I could find something anyway. Anyway, for now I just did a save as on the canvas element and uploaded it separately

Hoax Thanks for the text! That’s helpful. :D

Umbra

Encounter for you!

A group of Mycenians have found some armchairs and are lounging comfortably with books open in their laps. One of them looks up and says, “We’re doing research.” Then, with a wink, he returns to his reading.

Purr Thank you, updated the guide post!

You’ve just about finished clearing out a bookcase when you see a tuft of white stuck to the back of the shelf. Carefully, you wiggle it free and soon find yourself holding a feather quill. It’s in surprisingly decent condition and looks like it might still be good for writing a book or three.

I apologize that I completely forgot to get the text or a screenshot of acquisition of the item but I just wanted to note that this Magical Lamp-post Background is from an encounter during this event. I clicked the collect button before I really looked at what it was. I have it equipped to Stars Align to show I have the item anyhow…sorry I wasn’t paying more attention!

I actually captured the one of the Magical Lamp-Post yesterday for you and then forgot to bring it over here until now aha ^^;;

Added one new event
featuring the Fantasy book The Prince of Ice

Also updated some info on the anthologies, 3rd round word lists, some minor corrections, and added a quick spoiler preview of the anthology prizes we’ve seen so far.

Also from the Prince of Ice book:

You hear someone speaking softly nearby as you wander through the bookshelves. When you follow the sound, you see the back of a drasillis sitting in front of the Prince of Ice, gesturing animatedly. They seem to be telling the ineki on the cover a story. The Prince seems to be listening intently, and when he sees you, he gives you a nod of acknowledgement. Perhaps it’s best to leave them to it.
